Students in Mrs. Alex’s first grade recently published a class book. The book was published by the Student Treasures Publishing Company. Each student was given the opportunity to purchase a copy of the book, and the book was placed in the school library.

The students chose to write about their favorite place to visit. They described their experience at that place using their five senses. The class voted and decided the title of the book would be Our Adventures. Each student had two pages of text in the book along with two illustrations.

On Thursday, December 7, first-grade families were invited to a publishing party. We enjoyed cookies and juice while each student got to read their section of the book and show their illustrations to the class and their guests. They did a wonderful job!

East Forest Students Participate in Young Writer’s Program

7th grade nanowrimo winners

Last month, the 7th grade class at East Forest joined over 384,000 people worldwide in attempting to write an entire novel in just thirty days. They participated in the Young Writer’s Program (YWP) through the National Novel Writing Month event. The YWP defines a novel as a long work of fiction. In late October, the students set a personal word count goal for their novels ranging from 10,000 to 30,0000 words. They win the event by meeting their word count goal by midnight on November 30. Fifty percent of the 7th graders met their word count goals, doubling the national average. Collectively, the 7th grade class wrote 97,933 words in November.

Forest Area Juniors Attend Outreach Day

GovOut2017-Bradford-16

The junior class attended Congressman Glenn Thompson’s Government Outreach Day. Every year Congressman Thompson conducts this forum to interact and educate high school students about government. This year he spoke about healthcare, tax reform, and the impact of Trump’s presidency. After the event concluded students toured the grounds at The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and had lunch at their cafeteria.
