NEW BETHLEHEM, PA (EYT) — An impressive array of football talent will be on display in New Bethlehem for an upcoming youth football camp.

The camp, which is open to any child in the school district, is set to be held at Redbank Valley High School from June 24 through the 26 and will teach athletes entering grades third through eighth the proper fundamentals of the game of football while also providing instruction on how to play every position.

While the camp is being organized and hosted by the varsity football staff at Redbank Valley, the instruction during the camp will be provided by a host of guest coaches.

Headlining the list of guest coaches is former NFL All-Pro and Pro-Bowler, Bay Lawrence.

Lawrence is a 1969 graduate of Franklin Area High School where he earned 11 varsity letters. Upon graduating from Franklin, Lawrence headed to Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas where he became the college’s all-time leading rushing, amassing over 3,000 yards during his career. The record stood for 40 years until it was surpassed in 2013.

Although Lawrence went undrafted upon graduating from Tabor in 1973, he went on to have a very successful career in the National Football League for eight seasons as he played in 118 consecutive games with the Atlanta Falcons. Lawrence is still the Falcons’ all-time interceptions leader with 39 career takeaways.

Two additional guest coaches include Dan Jordan, a 2007 Redbank Valley graduate, and Dan Smith, a Franklin Area High School graduate.

Jordan is was an all-state football performer as well as a state medalist in track and field. He went on to play football at California University of Pennsylvania where he was a standout offensive lineman for four seasons. Jordan started on the offensive line for the Vulcans for three seasons, served as a team captain for two seasons, and earned numerous academic and athletic honors, most notably, earning All-American status twice.

Like Jordan, Smith, a Franklin Area High School graduate, was also an All-American performer at Edinboro University. Smith was a four-year starter for the Fighting Scots (1999-2002) and is only one of two Scots to ever be named All-PSAC West every season of his Edinboro career.

A member of Edinboro’s all-time team, Smith holds the all-time records for tackles for loss in a season (20) and tackles for loss in a career (57). He ranks second all-time in sacks with 25.5. In 2014, he was inducted into the Edinboro University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Following the conclusion of his playing career at Edinboro, Smith went on to play professionally in the American Indoor Football League for five seasons. In 2005, he helped lead the Erie Freeze to the AIFL championship game against the Richmond Bandits. Smith served as the head coach at Franklin Area from 2004-2012.

Redbank Valley’s all-time leading passer, Jake Daugherty (Waynesburg University), and second all-time leading passer, Jason Huffman (California University of Pennsylvania) are also slated to appear at the camp. Current college athletes Brock Barrett (Westminster College) and Connor Shoemaker (Groce City College) will also be in attendance providing instruction to the campers.

The camp is scheduled to run from 8:00 a.m. until noon each day.

“The goal of the Redbank Valley Youth Camp is to bring coaches with a tremendous amount of success playing the game of football at the college and professional level into our community for an affordable three-day camp for the kids in surrounding communities,” Redbank Valley first-year football coach Blane Gold said. “I have no doubt that these campers are going to receive the highest level of instruction possible from the very people who played the game at some of the highest levels.

“Personally, I am looking forward to watching the growth of the campers as they interact with our guest coaches while also having a whole lot of fun playing a game that all of us in attendance at the camp have a passion for.”

In addition to instruction on the proper technique of playing each position, campers will also compete in flag football games and a punt, pass, and kick competition with prizes being awarded to the winners.

Campers may register up until the beginning of camp. Any questions can be directed to Gold at 814-657-5923.
