Former Gaslight Campground Owner Passes Away

John L. Berry Jr., 75, of Emlenton-Clintonville Rd., Emlenton, a retired Emlenton businessman, passed away early Saturday morning, June 1, 2019, at Clarion Hospital.

John was born in Niagara Falls, NY on July 29, 1943. He was the son of the late John L. Sr. and Marie Ackerson Berry. John attended school in Cameron County and had attended Faith Baptist Church in Emporium.

John had a strong work ethic and worked for many years as a wire-forming setup technician for Keystone Automatic Technology.

Following his retirement, John and his wife lived in Bushnell, FL, and enjoyed traveling in their RV, watching NASCAR races, and working for a Bushnell area campground.

In 2004, John and his wife, Martha, purchased Gaslight Campground in Emlenton, where John enjoyed working and mowing, the annual campground car show, and most especially riding his Mule around the campground, and talking with all of his campers. John and his wife retired and sold the campground to their son, Mike, in 2013.

John is survived by his wife Martha Patterson Berry, whom he married in Emporium on March 2, 1962. Also surviving are three children, Jacqueline A. “Jackie” Smith, and her husband Tim, of Millerton, Gregory A. Berry, and his wife, Sophia, of Emporium, and Michael J. Berry, of Emlenton; his grandchildren, Nick, Cody, Miranda, Nicole, Chad, Heather, B.J., Heath, Macie, Makenna, Justin, and Scott, as well as nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ronald Berry and his wife, Miriam, of St. Mary’s, Larry Berry, and his wife, Meyoko, and James Berry, all of Emporium; two sisters, Diane Sowers, and Pamela Herzing, and her husband, Dave, all of Emporium; as well as a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Nichole.

A memorial service at Gaslight Campground in Emlenton will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hile Funeral Home of Emlenton.
