According to Pat Owoc, the Housing Unit Manager for Venango County’s Human Services Department, they found four homeless people while canvassing Oil City, Franklin, and some other boroughs.

“There was one person we helped get into a shelter,” Owoc said. “There were three others that were living in an abandoned home, but they didn’t feel endangered and wanted to stay where they were.”

Venango County has three shelters and there are nine people in them currently.

The count was held the evening of Wednesday, January 24.

Owoc said the county’s homeless people don’t stand out like they do in places like Erie or Pittsburgh.

“Ours are more hidden,” Owoc said. “Fortunately, we don’t have a big problem, and we try to help them as they contact us. We typically have a lot of “couch surfers,” people who stay with friends and move around as the need to.”
