Oil City Man Dies in Firewood Cutting Accident

James L. Fry, 71, of Oil City, died unexpectedly from an accident while cutting firewood near his hunting camp, Monday, June 24, 2019, in Pleasantville.

Born November 19, 1947, in Oil City, he was a son of the late Charles L. and M. Jane Bliss Fry.

Jim graduated from Oil City High School in the class of 1965 and went on to complete his education at the Humboldt Institute in Minneapolis, MN in 1967.

After graduating, he enlisted in the US Army where he proudly served as a member of the Screaming Eagles, 101st Airborne until 1972. He served for one year in Vietnam, earning the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.

When he returned home from the Army, Jim began working as a customer service technician for GTE, and later Verizon, retiring in 2004 after 34 years.

Mr. Fry was a lifelong and active member of the Rouseville United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee.

He loved spending time outdoors and at his hunting camp, doing winter shoots with the Rainbow Bowmen, and playing cards with his buddies. Jim enjoyed maintaining his rental properties and woodworking and treasured time with his grandchildren.

On October 5, 1968, he was married to the former Pamela R. Mong, who survives, in the Rouseville United Methodist Church and they celebrated 50 years of marriage last year.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two children, Thomas J. Fry and his wife Christine of Wattsburg, and Jennifer L. Murnock and her husband Robert of Pittsburgh; and five grandchildren, Danielle, Ashlee, and Dylan Fry, and Elliott and Carson Murnock.

Also surviving are a brother, Charles J. Fry and his wife Kathleen of Franklin, and a sister, Jacqueline A. Chickerella and her husband Gary of Lower Burrell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Cary B. Fry.

Friends may call at the Morrison Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 am in the Rouseville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Daniel Grimes officiating.

Interment will be in Rynd Farm Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the VETS Honor Guard.
