FRANKLIN, Pa. (EYT) — The Franklin Police Department is warning local residents about a scam reported in the area.

On Wednesday, March 6, the Franklin Police Department was contacted by representatives from the Franklin office of Freedom Services LLC, located at 1282 Liberty Street Franklin. The department was advised that multiple customers had reported receiving text messages and emails from “Freedom Services” advising their clients that they had a secondary check issued from the IRS for additional tax return funds.

When opened, the email requires the recipient to enter personal information to claim the check. It has been confirmed that this email is a phishing scam and should not be opened.

This scam may affect more than just customers of “Freedom Services” so as always the Franklin Police Department urges caution to all residence before entering opening unsolicited emails and/or before inputting any personal information into any website that has not been personally verified.

The Franklin Police Department would also like to note that due to this time of year being common for many to be receiving tax returns, both internet-based and phone-based scams will be on the rise.
