Franklin Woman Faces Felony Charges for Shoplifting

SUGARCREEK, Pa. (EYT) — A Franklin woman was arrested for shoplifting following an incident that occurred at the Dollar General store in Sugarcreek Borough.

According to court documents, Franklin-based State Police filed criminal charges against 62-year-old Marian Loretta Whitman, of Franklin.

According to a criminal complaint, Tpr. Keith Johnson, of Franklin-based State Police, was called to the Dollar General Store on Allegheny Boulevard for a report of retail theft.

The complaint states that when Tpr. Johnson met with the store manager, he pointed to Whitman and said she had been placing clothing items into her purse. The manager witnessed this in person and on surveillance video.

Tpr. Johnson asked Whitman about the items in her purse, and she allegedly opened it and pulled out several items, including multiple bras, a power pack keychains, a dress and a men’s ball cap, valued at $55.50, according to the complaint.

The items had Dollar General tags on them. Whitman allegedly admitted to taking them and asked if she could pay for them, the complaint continues.

Whitman was arrested and taken to PSP for processing. It was determined that it was Whitman’s fourth offense for retail theft.

She was arraigned in front of District Judge Patrick Lowery at 2:47 p.m. on Monday, June 19, on a third-degree felony charge of Retail Theft-Take Merchandise.

She is free on $5,000.00 unsecured bail.

Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on June 28 in Venango County Central Court.
