SandiesonGeorge Lewis Sandieson, 93, of Franklin, passed away at 5:35 p.m. on Sunday, May 3rd at The Caring Place in Franklin.

Born December 19, 1921 in Franklin, George was the son of the late George A. and Opal Johnston Sandieson.

He was married to the former Fay M. Hawthorne who preceded him in death on May 4, 2004.

Mr. Sandieson was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran, having served from July 22, 1942 until January 27, 1946.

While in the Army, he was the recipient of the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, the Good Conduct Ribbon, the Victory Medal, and the Meritorius Unit Award. Also, while in the military, George attended Chemical Warfare School, qualified as a Pistol Marksman.

George worked as a Chief Inspector and Time Clerk for Oil Well Supply, as Superintendent of the City of Franklin Water Department for more than 17 years, as a Diesel Erection Mechanic for Chicago Pneumatic Tool for more than 17 years, at Franklin Hospital in Housekeeping, and at Joy Manufacturing in the Maintenance Department.

George was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Franklin.

He was also a member of the American Legion, and a former member of the Franklin Kiwanis and the Maple Cave Flying Club. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.

George is survived by his 4 children, Richard L. Sandieson and his wife, Lynn, of Meadville, Robert F. Sandieson and his wife, Jane, of Franklin; Debra K. Smith and her husband, Richard of Seneca, and Karen S. Stanton and her husband, Tim, of Mercersburg, PA.

He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren, Bryan Sandieson and his wife, Aimee, of Franklin, Kevin Sandieson and his wife, Katie of Waukesha, WI, Christopher Sandieson of Mt. View, CA, Kara Bungo and her husband, Pat, of McDonald, PA, Mark Jack and his wife, Rachel, of Amo, IN, Matthew Jack and his fiancee’, Ana Gonzalez, of Avon, IN, Marin Sandieson of Meadville, Rachel Wingert and her husband, Brandt, of Mercersburg, PA, Joni Helmers and her husband, John, of Mercersburg, PA, and John Stanton, also of Mercersburg, PA; and his 11 great-grandchildren.

George is additionally survived by his sister, Virginia Huff and her husband, John, of Franklin, and his brother-in-law, Jack Lange, of Ft. Collins, CO.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Eleanor Sanner, Betty Borger and Marien Lange.

Family and friends of George will be received at the Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin on Thursday, May 7th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc., on Friday, May 8th at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jeff Little, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens where military honors will be accorded by the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to either the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard – PO Box 137, Franklin, PA 16323 and/or to the Venango County Toymakers – 191 Howard Street, Franklin PA 16323.
