Golden Eagles Volleyball Starts PSAC Play with Pair of Victories

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Clarion University women’s volleyball team started PSAC play with a pair of victories at a PSAC Crossover event at Millersville Friday.

The Golden Eagles topped host Millers 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-13) before knocking off Lock Haven 3-2 (25-17, 22-25, 25-15, 19-25, 15-6) to run their record to 10-0 on the season and 2-0 in the PSAC West.

BALANCED OFFENSE LEADS CLARION PAST LOCK HAVEN IN THRILLER

In the nightcap of the two matches played Friday, the Golden Eagles had four players reach double figures in kills to topple the Lady Eagles.

Abbey Cox had a team-best 16 kills to go with two blocks and a .542 hitting percentage (16 kills, 3 errors, 24 attempts), while freshman middle hitter Gabrielle Olson, fresh off her PSAC West Athlete of the Week award, added 14 kills and three blocks while hitting .619 (14-1-21).

Also for Clarion, Mackenzie Biggs had 13 kills, two digs and three blocks, Taylor Braunagel added 11 kills and seven digs and Carlie Bieranowski chipped in with nine kills and 10 digs.

Laura Subject ran the offense smoothly recording 59 set assists while adding 14 digs and three kills, and Morgan Seybold paced the defense with 26 digs. Catherine Ferragonio gave the Golden Eagles four players with double digit digs adding 10.

Clarion came out strong in the first set winning 25-17 behind four kills each from Olson and Bieranowski.

After Lock Haven tied the match at one apiece, Clarion went back in front with the 25-15 third-set victory paced by five kills from Braunagel.

But Lock Haven forced the fifth-and-deciding set with 25-19 fourth-set win and then took a quick 2-0 lead in the fifth set before the Golden Eagles ran off six of the next eight points to take a 6-4 lead. Lock Haven made it 6-5 but Clarion finished the match on a 9-1 run that saw Cox record four of her 16 kills.

THE “B” SQUAD DOES IN MILLERSVILLE 3-0

In the opener of the day, Clarion’s “B” squad of Bieranowski, Biggs and Braunagel played the leading role with Biggs recording a team-high nine kills and Bieranowski and Braunagel each adding seven. Cox chipped in with five.

Subject had 28 set assists, four kills, three digs and a block, while Seybold recorded 18 digs and Ferragonio nine.

Clarion returns to action with a pair of PSAC Crossover matches at Shippensburg Saturday taking on the host Raiders before facing defending PSAC Champion Pitt-Johnstown.

NOTES — Clarion is 10-0 for the second straight season and for the third time in school history. The Golden Eagles started 14-0 last year and 12-0 in 2007 … Clarion received four votes in this week’s AVCA Coaches’ Top 25 poll … With her third set assist of the Millersville match, Subject became the fourth player in school history to record 3,000 set assists in a career. Then, against Lock Haven, she passed Ashley Kreiner (3,030) to move into third place in school history with 3,084 career set assists.
