Harold Eugene Andrews, 82 of Cochranton died Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at the Meadville Marquette Hospice House after a long illness of cancer and heart disease.

Born, April 2, 1933 in Cochranton, he was the son of Bryan and Ella Dolan Andrews. He married Concetta (Connie) Pero on December 31, 1953 and she preceded him in death on December 9, 2009.

He attended Cochranton High School and enlisted in the US Army on April 28, 1950. He trained in Ft. Knox, Kentucky and was sent to Korea on October 1, 1950. Harold was captured on January 21, 1951 after a fire fight in South Korea. He was held captive at Bean Camp and also One and Five (Chansong) until he was released on August 16, 1953. Discharged as a corporal on October 13, 1953 near the end of Operation Big Switch he received the following medals; Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, 9 Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and an Ex-POW Medal.

Returning from the war, he worked at the former Shall’s Chevrolet in Cochranton as well as other car dealerships as an autobody technician. He and his wife also owned and operated Andrew’s Auto Body as well as the Cochranton Carousel Card and Gift Shop. In 1993 he retired after 30 years from Conrail where he worked as a carman.
He enjoyed hunting, collecting antiques (especially clocks), restoring antique automobiles, and working at his home.

Harold was a member of the Cochranton Presbyterian Church, lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Association, Meadville Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, American Ex-Prisoners of War, the Cochranton American Legion, Korean War Veterans Association, Korean War Ex-Prisoner of War Association, Northwest PA Barbed Wire Association, (serving as the commander for 2 years) and also the Cochranton Volunteer Fire Department, Station 4.

Survivors include a daughter Debra Caffrey of Charlottesville, Virginia and a son Harold (Andy) Andrews Jr., and his wife Laura of Chardon, Ohio. Six grandchildren, Nicole Caccavo Bonnett and her husband John, Tiffany D’Onofrio, Sean Caffrey and his wife Jennifer, Eric Caffrey, Bryan Andrews and Tyler Andrews, 2 great grandchildren, Ava D’Onofrio and Jackson Andrews, two sisters, Ruth Weaver and her husband Sonny of Cochranton, Rose Pagley of Cochranton, a brother William (Bill) Andrews and his wife Bette of Cochranton and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, Francis, Robert, Richard and Carl and a sister Helen.

Friends will be received at the Dickson Family Funeral Home, Inc., 123 S. Franklin St., Cochranton on Friday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, and Saturday, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. The funeral will be 2:00pm Sunday from the funeral home with the Rev. Marshall Lillie, chaplain for Hospice of Crawford County, officiating. Interment will be in Cochranton Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Cochranton American Legion.
