Harold S. “Dink” Hazlett, 93, of Oil City, went to be with the Lord on Monday November 25th at The Caring Place in Franklin surrounded by his family.

Born September 1, 1926 in Franklin, he was the son of the late Roy and Clara Brown Hazlett.

He was married for 50 years to the former Betty C. Shontz who preceded him in death in 1996.

He proudly served his country during the Korean War and spent time in both Japan and Korea. He served on the front lines for 18 months as a “gunner” and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant before being honorably discharged in 1953.

Harold had a strong work ethic and was proud of the fact that he stayed consistently employed even in hard times. He worked in and around Oil City at various places including a period of time for the railroad, Hays Bakery, Allied Barrel Works, and finally Manions Steel Barrel. He retired from Manions after 40 plus years with the company.

He lived most of his life in the Oil City neighborhood of Siverly, where in earlier years he was known for taking meticulous care of his yard and house. Peeling paint and an untrimmed lawn were unacceptable. When he wasn’t working, he was known to enjoy wrestling and boxing on TV. He loved to read and spend time with his family. That love of reading was passed on to his daughter and granddaughter. His immediate as well as extended family, knew him to be a kind, honest, and humorous man.

A few years after the death of his wife, he made his home with his daughter Dorthea and son in law Rick Burris and their children Justin and Lindsey. He was a devoted, loving father and grandfather who enjoyed taking part in the birthday and holiday celebrations of his family.

Harold was a member for many years of the Willow Street Free Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees, and as a Greeter and Usher. It was there that he taught his daughter by example to love and serve God.

Surviving are his daughter Dorthea Burris and her husband Rick of Oil City, his grandson Justin Burris and his wife Michelle of Oil City and his granddaughter Lindsey Burris and her fiancé Ryan Hanna of Oil City; a sister Adella Langslow of Virginia; a brother Paul Hazlett and his wife Yvonne of New York; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Hazlett, and two sisters Bernice Stitzinger and Doris Karwoski.

Friends will be received at the Morrison Funeral Home on Sunday, December 1, from 2 pm to 4 pm, where full military honors will be accorded by the VETS Honor Guard at 4 pm with a funeral service following with the Rev. Mark Rusnak, chaplain of AseraCare Hospice officiating.

Interment is in the Shaw Farm Cemetery.
