Heeter Helps Clarion Hold Off Cheyney

CLARION, Pa. – Behind Hannah Heeter’s 17th career double-double, the Clarion University women’s basketball team held off upset-minded Cheyney to get a 65-61 win in PSAC Crossover play Saturday night at Tippin Gym.

Heeter had 17 points and 16 rebounds, her second straight game of at least 15 rebounds and the 11th 15-rebound game of her career, including nine points and 11 rebounds in the second half to help Clarion rally from a 33-31 halftime deficit.

Freshman point guard Tania Holmes added 14 points and six steals including a big old-school three-point play with 3:43 left that gave Clarion (6-6 overall, 3-4 PSAC West) a 58-51 lead and capped a key 5-0 spurt for the Golden Eagles. Fellow freshman Mariah Gador added 12 points.

Kyra Hines-Allen and Faye Dunston each had 14 points to lead Cheyney (0-10, 0-7 PSAC East), which led by as many as eight, 33-25, late in the first half before three-pointers by Nicole Miloser and Holmes got Clarion back within two at the break.

The lead then changed hands seven times with a tie in the second half before Clarion went ahead for good, 48-47, on a Heeter layup with 8:47 left. That was the first basket of a 13-4 run that started with a Leisha Crawford free throw at the 9:08 mark and ended in the Holmes old-school three at 3:43.

Heeter added three steals, two blocks and an assist to her double-double and shot 7 of 9 from the floor. Ann Deibert chipped in seven rebounds and two points, while Aleya Miller had six boards helping Clarion outrebound Cheyney 52-40.
