CUSSEWAGO TWP., Pa. (EYT) – Officials say a hunter was injured in an accidental shooting in Crawford County on Wednesday afternoon.

According to a report released by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, the shooting took place near the intersection of Irish Road and Middle Road in Cussewago Township, Crawford County, around 1:22 p.m. on Wednesday, December 1.

Officials say five people were deer hunting on private property when the victim, identified as Lawrence Pavolko, 58, of Albion, suffered a gunshot wound to the upper right chest.

According to the report, three of the hunters were driving deer, while the other two were posted at a stationary location.

During the drive, a deer was spotted by the furthest driver who shot. Moments later, the victim saw a deer and also took a shot. Then the middle driver presumably saw the same deer and shot. Just after the shot, yelling was heard, and it was then found that a bullet had struck the victim.

Officials say Nathan Pavolko, 28, of Springboro, fired the rifle shot that struck the victim.

The other four hunters provided aid until EMTs arrived at the scene. A medical helicopter then took the victim to UPMC Hamot for treatment.

The report indicates the victim was wearing fluorescent orange on his head, chest, and back.
