Inmate Found Dead in Cell at SCI Forest

MARIENVILLE, Pa. – An investigation is underway after an inmate was found dead in his cell at SCI Forest in Marienville.

Superintendent Derek Oberlander said corrections officers found Larry J. Cragle unresponsive in his cell at approximately 2:40 p.m. on May 5. The officers provided immediate emergency first aid and continued to do so until paramedics arrived. Cragle was declared dead at 3:26 PM by Dr. Hoh from Clarion Hospital via Clarion EMS.

The Pennsylvania State Police and the Forest County coroner will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the county coroner’s office.

Cragle, 41, was committed to the DOC by Lawrence County on February 2, 2016. He was serving a 17-year, 3-month to 39-year sentence for a predominant offense of rape by forcible compulsion.

Facility staff has notified the inmate’s next of kin.
