Irene Witmer Swanton, 95, formerly of Maple St. Franklin died at Sugar Creek Station on Friday, September 28, 2018, due to declining health.

Born in Oil City of November 22, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Ida and Clyde McKinley.

Irene attended elementary school in Titusville and then attended Colestock High school where she was on the girls’ basketball team. Irene went on to graduate from Titusville High School in 1940. She went to nurses training at Meadville City Hospital in 1940 and graduated in 1943. She went on to become a nurse anesthetist studying at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Irene retired from Franklin Hospital in 1987 having worked there for 22 years as a nurse anesthetist.

She married Russell J. Swanton on September 3, 1971, and he preceded her in death on July 21, 2003. Together they enjoyed traveling, having been to almost all 50 states.

Irene was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She is survived by two daughters; Kathleen Smith and Georgia Peterson and her husband Thomas both of Franklin; grandchildren, Stacy Smith of Miami, FL, Sharon and Mark Marshall of Mt. Airy, MD, John Smith and his companion Kim Alt of Franklin, Rhonda and Bill Moore of Pasadena, MD, Tom and Stephanie Peterson of Cranberry, and Tonya and Louis Rich of Hollywood, FL; great-grandchildren, Joshua and Taylor Myers of Mt. Airy, MD, Brad Smith and his companion Jasmine McKinnon of Oil City, Emma Marshall of Mt. Airy, MD, Dodge, Wyatt and Grace Peterson of Cranberry, and Ryne and Rene Rich of Hollywood, FL and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline Ruth Swanton in 1989; three brothers, Walter, Charles and Robert; a sister, Frances Stidham and a son-in-law Ronald Smith in 2000.

Funeral arrangements entrust to Huff – Guthrie Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 312 West Park St. Franklin where family and friends are welcome from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Shawn Johnson, Chaplain at Sugar Creek Station, officiating.

Interment will follow at Oak Park Cemetery in New Castle.

Memorial donations may be made to the Activities Department at Sugar Creek Station 351 Causeway Dr. Franklin, PA 16323.
