Iva Hess, 92, of Oakwood Heights, Oil City, died October 30, 2017.

Born on October 24, 1925, in Dearth, Pennsylvania, she was graduated from Uniontown High School in 1943.

She later moved to Alexandria, Virginia where she worked for many years in Washington, D.C., in various responsible positions in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. She served as Deputy Clerk of Court during the trials of the Watergate scandal defendants of the Nixon White House, Judge Gerhard Gesell presiding.

Prior to her retirement, Iva was the office manager of Culligan-Hess Water Conditioning in Oil City and Brookville.

Iva traveled extensively on the East Coast during her years in Washington, often catching the train with her friends on a Friday night and spending the weekend touring New York City.

She traveled frequently to Europe, and upon moving to Oil City, enjoyed many excursions with the Gallivanters of the YWCA.

The Salvation Army Auxiliary, Christian Women’s Club, Lioness Club and Red Hat Society were among her memberships and community service to Oil City for many years.

Throughout her life, Iva was a beloved Aunt who enjoyed nothing more than spoiling her nieces and nephews, who greatly admired her quiet role model style as an avid world traveler and successful, professional working woman in the 1960’s and 70’s, which was not common for women of that era.

Iva devoted her life to the care of her mother, and the two provided a warm and loving place to visit, along with many delicious meals.

In later years, as her nieces and nephews grew older, Iva readily joined them in long card games around the dinner table during the holidays.

Iva was predeceased by her parents, Moses and Anna Hess; brothers George, Frank and Wilbur; sisters-in-law June Hess and Thelma “Hecky” Hess Willingham; nephews Chris Hess, Ronald Hess and great-nephew Dustin Cone.

She is survived by a brother, John R. Hess and his wife, Marilynn, of Virginia; sister-in-law Peachie Hess of Oil City, dear friend and care companion Nancy Morrow of Franklin; nieces Donna (Butch) Wells of Virginia, Janet (Kenny) Cline of Virginia, Nancy Hess of Oil City, Patty (Bob) Murray of Missouri, Karrie McMillan of Virginia, and Suzy (Richard) Wyant of Ohio; nephews Bill (Tina) Hess of Butler, Greg (Susan) Hess of Arizona, and Barry Cone, Ed (Deb) Cone, and Jim (Ann) Cone of Illinois; 15 great nieces and nephews and 14 great-great nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Reinsel Funeral Home, 116 Bissell Avenue, Oil City at 2:00 pm with a memorial service immediately following at 3:00 pm, Rev.

Byron Myers of Grace United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Smock, Pennsylvania.

Iva’s family wishes to express their sincere appreciation and thanks to Presbyterian SeniorCare at Oakwood Heights and AseraCare Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care of her during her
residency.
