James C. “Jim” Alcorn

James C. “Jim” Alcorn, 53, of Franklin, passed away Wednesday morning December 13, 2017, at Oil City Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center after complications from bladder cancer due to contaminated drinking water he was exposed to while serving with the United States Marines at Camp Lejeune.

Born January 22, 1964, in Oil City he is the son of Mary T. Staab Alcorn and the late Glenn M. Alcorn Jr.

Jim was a 1982 graduate of Cranberry High School and earned his Bachelor’s degree in education from Clarion University in 1995 and his Master’s degree from Edinboro University in 2005.

Mr. Alcorn taught 9th and 10th-grade social studies for 21 years at Franklin High School.

Teaching was his life and he truly enjoyed working with the students.

He was served as Cross Country Coach for 21 years at Franklin High School and also two years at Rocky Grove High School.

He also assisted with coaching Track. He was a dedicated and knowledgeable coach who always knew Cross Country statistics from across the state.

He coached alongside his ‘Second sister”, Connie Palmer his entire career.

Jim also served as a PIAA official for cross country for many years.

Jim proudly served his country in the United States Marines during operation Desert Storm.

He served in many hostile places around the world. Jim was a Sergeant in B Company 2nd Tank Division and earned medals for Rifle Expert, Pistol Expert, Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Good Conduct Medal. He always enjoyed telling his students his many stories from serving in the military.

He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins fan and always enjoyed reading, especially Tom Clancy books.

Jim will be greatly missed by his beloved dog Sami.

In addition to his mother, Mary, he is survived by five siblings; Dave Alcorn and his wife Sue of East Liverpool, OH, Deb “Rosy” Cunningham and her husband Gerry of Oil City, Tom Alcorn and his wife Therese of Oil City, Don Alcorn and his wife Aimee of Lebanon and Dennis Alcorn and his wife Kelly of Oil City.

Also, surviving are eight nieces and nephews; Andy Cunningham, Chris Cunningham, and Dan Cunningham all of Oil City, Logan Alcorn and Caeden Alcorn of Lebanon and Matthew Alcorn, Courtney Alcorn and Kaitlyn Alcorn all of Oil City; several cousins, aunts, uncles.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Huff Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 312 West Park St. Franklin where family and friends are welcome from 12:00 P.M.- 2:00 P.M. & 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Friday.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday in Christ United Methodist Church, 1135 Buffalo St. Franklin with Jay Ferringer, officiating.

Interment with full military honors rendered by the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens.
