James E. Guyton

James E. Guyton, 91, a lifelong Franklin resident and former City of Franklin Fire Chief, died peacefully on Saturday, February 9, 2019, with family by his side, following a period of declining health.

He was born April 10, 1927 in Franklin, a beloved son of the late Joseph H. and Mary Augusta Kroell Guyton.

He was a 1945 graduate of Franklin High School. Following high school, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and proudly served his country during World War II. On his return from the U.S. Navy, Jim assisted his mother and father in the family business: the former Guyton Grocery, located at the corner of Buffalo and Thirteenth Streets in Franklin.

He was married August 21, 1949, in St. Patrick Church to the former Mary Joan “Jody” Breene, who preceded him in death on July 1, 2012.

On March 1, 1954, he began work as a minuteman at the City of Franklin Fire Department, where he retired June 30, 1994, as Chief.

He was an active and faithful member of St. Patrick Church in Franklin, where he served for many years as an usher. He was a member of The Knights of Columbus, 3rd degree, and was awarded a plaque as the longest surviving member of the Knights in Franklin.

He was a lifetime member of Franklin Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #110, where he, along with his late wife, Jody enjoyed bowling through the years. He was a lifetime member of Franklin V.F.W. Jesse Greer Post# 1835, a lifetime member of The Catholic War Veterans and The Franklin Eagles Club.

He enjoyed calling Bingo, playing cards and going to the casino. Jim always looked forward to traveling and sharing good times with family and friends.

He is survived by his children: Karen Fonzo and husband, Joe of Palm Desert, CA; James E. Guyton, Jr. and wife, Bridget of Raleigh, NC; Thomas Guyton and wife, Sujinda of Vienna, VA and Julie Blomberg and husband, Bret of Farmingville, NY; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving is his brother, William T. Guyton and wife, Moira of Kure Beach, NC; and a brother-in-law, Harold E. Hartle of Franklin; in addition to many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two grandsons: Matthew Guyton and Joey Fonzo; a brother, Ralph J. Guyton, Sr. and by his sister, Mary Ann Hartle.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation.

Family and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial Friday at 11 AM at St. Patrick Church in Franklin, with Monsignor John J. Herbein, pastor, officiating.

Immediately following Mass, full military burial rites will be accorded by The V.E.T.S. Funeral Honor Guard of Franklin, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick School, 952 Buffalo Street, Franklin, PA 16323.
