James R. Wessell

James R. Wessell, 85, of Seneca, died at 12:15 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 2014 at his home following a period of declining health.

Born December 8, 1928 in Oil City, he was the son of the late Albert A. and Clara (Neubauer) Wessell.

He was a 1947 graduate of Cranberry High School.

Mr. Wessell belonged to the Wild Turkey Federation, the North American Hunting Club, the N.R.A., and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Oil City.

Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and woodworking; and was a NASCAR and Steelers fan.

In his earlier years, he was employed by Oilwell Supply, C.P.T., and Oakwood Rose Gardens. He worked for Hays Bakery as a route driver for more than thirty years, retiring in 1990.

He was married in Mercer on December 31, 1949 to the former Marjorie V. Speerstra, and she preceded him in death on November 13, 2010.

Surviving are three children: Thomas H. Wessell of Franklin, Sally A. McCauley of Seneca, and Diana J. Wessell of Oil City; seven grandchildren: Erica Craig and husband Brent, Lindsey Mealy and husband Justin, Amanda McCauley, Michael McCauley and wife Andrea, Allyson Manners, and Marissa and Kathryn Dolecki; and five great-grandchildren: Jacob, Maria, Micah, Jamieson, and Gavin.

Also surviving is his sister, Patricia Toscano of Franklin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert J. Wessell; three brothers, Clatus Wessell, Harold “Andy” Wessell, and Gerald Wessell; and four sisters, Helen, Clara, May, and Mable.

Friends will be received Wednesday (July 2) from 4-7 p.m. in the Hile-Best Funeral Home, Inc., 2781 Rte. 257 in Seneca, Cranberry Township, where the funeral service will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Randy Kightlinger, V.N.A. hospice chaplain, officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens in Cranberry.
