Joanne Crowther Evanoff McDowell

Joanne Crowther Evanoff McDowell, 72, of Seneca, passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Monday, June 11, surrounded by her family after a nine-year-long battle with ovarian cancer.

Joanne was born November 1, 1945, in Oil City, the daughter of Ralph and Martha Jane Tussey Crowther. She graduated from Cranberry High School in 1963 and from Beaver College (Now Arcadia University) in 1967. She did graduate work at Gannon and Clarion Universities.

She was first married to Charles Evanoff on August 12, 1967, and he preceded her in death on October 7, 1973. She married Eugene McDowell on June 24, 1994, and he survives.

Joanne was employed as a teacher with the Cranberry School District, retiring in 2001. She was a member of PSEA-R and PSERS.

She was an active and life-long member of Second Presbyterian Church, Oil City, serving as a deacon and an elder. She was currently serving as the Clerk of Session. She also served on the Board of Presbyterian Women. In addition, she was a member of the Belles Lettres Club.

Active in volunteer work, as a breast cancer survivor, she was a Reach to Recovery volunteer; she delivered Meals on Wheels, and served at the Open Door Café, a mission outreach of her church.

She also enjoyed many hobbies in her retirement including oil painting, quilting, cross-stitching, creating stained glass lamps, and playing bridge. She especially enjoyed traveling and spending time with her beloved grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three loving daughters, Susie Reese (Paul Yeckley) of Allision Park, PA, Dr. Allison Evanoff (Dan Rooney) of Gastonia, NC and Betsy Katekovich (Ray) of Milton, GA; and two step-sons, Todd McDowell (Angela) of Stafford, VA, and Jeff McDowell (Kim) of Belle Vernon, PA. She is survived by the following grandchildren: Amanda and Kyle Reese, JP and Brendan Rooney, and Ella, Rowan, and Sadie Katekovich, and step-grandchildren: Rachel (Zack) Fisher, Brendan (Julie) Yeckley, Andrew, Emily, Susanna, Jordyn, and Olivia McDowell, and two step-grandchildren: Mia and Hayden Fisher.

Also, she is survived by three brothers and a sister, Ernie (Liz) Crowther of Seneca, Jim (Susan) Crowther of Seneca, John (Vicki) Crowther of The Villages, FL and Marie (Bruce) Davy of Battle Creek, MI; in-laws, Pamela Ream of Lewisburg, WV, Joanne Demyanovich, Cynthia Mack, Peter Evanoff, all of Erie. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband.

Friends may call at the Morrison Funeral Home on Friday, June 15, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 16, at 11:00 a.m. at the Second Presbyterian Church, 111 Reed Street, Oil City with the Rev. Sue Montgomery, officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens.

Memorial may be made to the American Cancer Society for genetic research, the Open Door Cafe, or Second Presbyterian Church.
