Joanne Frances (Merritt) Bortner

The angels came down and took Joanne Frances Merritt Kuntz Bortner to the Kingdom of God on Friday, March 10, 2017 with her loving family at her side.

A resident of 20078 Merritt Road, Saegertown, PA, Joanne was born on May 17, 1946 in Meadville, PA, a daughter of the late Morris L. Merritt, Sr. and Helen A. Skebe Merritt.

In 1966, she married Sp4 Richard L. Kuntz who in 1968 was killed in action in Vietnam. She subsequently married Danny Richard Bortner on September 17, 1983 who survives.

Joanne was a selfless caregiver to many of her family members including her parents and her in-laws.

She enjoyed time spent with her family and especially with her grandchildren.

Joanne loved doing arts and crafts as well as playing euchre, going to the casino, attending garage sales, and was a patriotic charter and life member of Venango VFW Post #169.

In addition to her husband, Danny, Joanne is survived by a daughter – Michelle (Mark) Anthony of Venango; four sons – Richard Kuntz (Tina) of Punxsutawney; James “Jim” (Shawnda) Chandler of Apex, NC; Scott Hanzes of Cambridge Springs; and Jason Bradick (Erin Sulentic and her daughter – Lyli) of Apex, NC; and a step-daughter – Tabatha Bortner of Springs Branch, TX.

Joanne is also survived by two sisters – Nancy (John) Powell of Meadville and Charlotte (Doug) Wood of Guys Mills; three brothers – Morris “Roy” (Laura) Merritt of Cambridge Springs; Edward “Ed” (Barbara) Merritt of Venango; and Robert “Bob” Merritt of Venango.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren – Sarah (Skyler) Drumheller, Mary Anthony, Austin Sabatucci, Carter Kuntz, Andrew Sheffer, Grace Hanzes (who shares a birthday with Joanne), and Rivers Porper; and two great grandchildren – Silas and Irie Drumheller. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins who were very special to her as well as her dear friends.

Friends may call at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home in Cambridge Springs on Monday, March 13th, from 2-4 and 6-8.

The funeral service will begin at 8:00 p.m. with Reverend Mark Fischer pastor of Twelve Apostles Lutheran Church in Saegertown officiating.
