John L. Breene

John L. Breene, 77, of Franklin, passed away at UPMC Hamot in Erie on Friday, May 25, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.

Born October 16, 1940, in Franklin, he was the son of the late George and Florence Theresa Schupp Breene. He married the former Kathryn Joanne Watterson on February 8, 1958, and she survives. They celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary earlier this year.

John was a 1958 graduate of Franklin High School and a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Franklin.

John retired as the Captain of the Franklin Police Department in 1988 after working for the Department for 24 years. He then worked for the Franklin Area School District as an Educational Assistant and retired from the School District in 2005. John also worked as a ‘Tip Staff’ for the Venango County Courthouse.

John was very active in the community. He was past president of the Kiwanis and was named “Kiwanian of the Year”. He was a former board member of Vision Quest and Youth Alternatives, a life-member of F.O.P., a life-member of Northwest Chiefs of Police, a life-member of B.P.O.E. #110, and a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the local Franklin area sports teams and the Pittsburgh sports teams. John also enjoyed hunting, reading and loved to sing Irish songs.

In addition to his wife, Joanne, John is survived by his son, Mark Breene and his wife, Constance of Franklin; his two daughters, Melinda Rayman and her husband, Mark, of Little Elm, TX, and Jennifer Boozer and her husband, Chad, of Schwenksville, PA; his eleven grandchildren, John L. Breene, III of Chester VA, Daniel Breene (Kelley) of Duncansville, PA, Shannon Burrelli (Christopher) of New Castle, Corey Breene (Kayla Dziekriasz) of Franklin, Sabrina Mason of Seneca, Elizabeth Breene (Mike Amoroso) of Utica, Connor Rayman of Denton, TX, Seth and Aliya Rayman of Little Elm, TX, and Ryan and Alexis Boozer of Schwenksville, PA; and his five great-grandchildren, Hannah Breene of Oil City, Rebecca, Jackson and Samantha Breene of Duncansville, and Noah Burrelli of New Castle.

He is also survived by his brother-in-law, James Guyton; his two sisters-in-law, Judy Breene of Franklin and Louise Breene of Roanoke, VA; and his very special companion, his dog, “Sammie”.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Breene; his son, John L. Breene, Jr.; his three brothers, George “Bud” Breene, Larry Breene, and Robert Breene; his two sisters, Kathleen Patten and Jody Guyton; and his brother-in-law, Charles Patten.

Family and friends will be received at the Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin on Tuesday, May 29, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

A Funeral Mass for John will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church on Wednesday, May 30, at 12:00 p.m. with Msgr. John Herbein officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Patrick’s School – 952 Buffalo Street, Franklin PA 16323 and/or the Franklin Public Library – 521 12th Street, Franklin PA 16323.
