Katherine Inez Styers, 102, of Clarion, passed away on July 26, 2017 at the Shippenville Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born December 20, 1914 in Clarion on the west side of the Clarion River near the Big Rock by the Toby Bridge. Her father was David Henry Miller and her mother was Bessie Belle Reed Miller.

She enjoyed being part of a very large family of brothers and sisters: James Miller, Iva Hays, Victor Miller, Sidney Miller, Roy Miller, Calvin Miller, Richard D. Miller, Nora Bell Buzard and John Miller.

She attended the one room school at Trout Run where her future husband also attended. When she graduated, she did a few babysitting jobs, then at sixteen, she began working at the C.A. Rankin General Store in Clarion.

On November 7, 1936, Katherine and Wayne Vernon Styers were married in Jamestown, New York. After a brief wedding trip, the couple returned to Clarion and set up housekeeping in the home that Wayne had built on Fifth Avenue. Their first home was a log cabin, somewhat larger than the ones he had been building for Cook Forest camps. Several years later, a larger home was built on the property.

Wayne Styers passed away in 1997, and Katherine remained in her home until 2002, when she moved to the home her daughter and son-in-law built on Servey Road with half of the house for her use.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Clarion. She enjoyed playing cards and hosting card parties at her home. She cherished time with her family and recently enjoyed celebrating her “little brother” Calvin Miller’s 100th Birthday by attending the party in his honor.

Katie is survived by her daughter, Bonnie and her husband Major Ronald Sweitzer, of Clarion; and her brother Calvin Miller and wife Jane, also of Clarion.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings.

Memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 600 Wood Street, Clarion PA 16214 (www.fumc-clarion.org).
