Kay’s Smorgasbord Owner Passes Away at 95

Casimira C SkrobatCasimira C. “Kay” Skrobat, 95, an Oil City Businesswoman, died Saturday Feb. 19, 2017 at her home following a brief period of declining health.

Born Oct. 30, 1921 in Oil City, PA., she was the daughter of the late Albert & Mary Warchol Garbacz.

Kay attended Assumption Grade School, and was a graduate of Oil City High School.

She then went to the Penn State Business College.

On Feb. 15, 1941 she married Matthew W. Skrobat.

Mr. Skrobat had purchased Dad’s place in 1942 and changed the name to Skruby’s Inn, when the redevelopment on the East end of town happened, Kay and her husband moved the business across the street to the old city hotel. Kay ran the Smorgasbord and her husband ran the bar on the other side.

Matthew died in 1979 and Kay continued the business, working right up until her death.

She had worked as a businesswoman on the southside of Oil City since 1942.

She enjoyed all of her customers.

Kay was raised at the Assumption Church and later in life attended St. Stephen’s Church.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

She is survived by one son, Gene Skrobat of Oil City; a sister -in-law, Frances Garbacz of Oil City; and by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Laurie Taublieb, Joseph Garbacz, Sally Keating, Anthony Garbacz, Galdys Nicol, Alvin Garbacz, and Helen Bello Payne.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M. Wednesday in the Assumption B.V.M. Church with Rev. John Miller, as the celebrant.

Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Garden.
