Kenneth L Aul, 94, of Houston, died Wednesday, October 22, 2014 in his home.

He was born November 23, 1919 in Marienville, a son of C. Calvin and Carrie Kuhl Aul. Mr. Aul was a graduate of Marienville High School.

During World War II, he served four years in the US Navy as a Pharmacist Mate 2nd aboard the troop transport, USS John Penn. While on board, his had tours in Europe where they were part of Operation Torch in the Mediterranean and in the Pacific where they shuttled troops around the Solomon Islands. His ship was sunk by a Japanese torpedo while in the harbor at Guadalcanal. He was rescued from the water by crew from another ship in his flotilla. He was then sent to San Francisco to recover. During this time he married Margaret E. Kahle of Clarington, PA on February 25, 1944 in St. John’s Presbyterian Church. He continued his Navy service and was shipped back to the South Pacific for another year before being discharged. Mr. Aul was the recipient of: the European, African and Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one bronze star; the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with three bronze stars; the Solomon Islands Medal; the World War II Victory Medal; and the Purple Heart.

Mr. Aul had worked at various glass plants in Jersey City, NJ, Knox, PA and Danielson, CT. From 1961 until his retirement in 1984, he worked for the Metro then Kraft the Ball Glass in Washington the last 17 years as plant manager. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Houston and a former Elder of the First United Presbyterian Church in Houston. Mr. Aul was a member of the Washington County Manufacturers Association, Boy Scouts of America and the Masonic Lodge in Marienville.

Surviving in addition to his wife are: two sons, Kenneth C. Aul of Washington and Samuel N. Aul and his wife Zina of Palmetto, FL; his daughter-in-law Debbie Stratton and her husband Steve; three grandchildren, Samuel C. Aul (Becky), Melissa Kaplan (Rahim) and Roberta J. Weiss (Christopher); and seven great grandchildren, Henry, Peter and Genevieve Aul, Jackson and Scarlett Kaplan and Emily and August Weiss.

Deceased are: a son Richard Aul; and three brothers and four sisters.

Friends will be received from 5 to 7 Sunday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 Monday in the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, Owner/Supervisor, 27 Cherry Ave., Houston, PA 15342, where services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Masonic services will be held Sunday at 7:00p.m. in the funeral home. Additional visitation and services will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 Wednesday in the McDonald Funeral Home, 140 Cherry St., Marienville, PA 16239, with services at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 30, 2014. Interment will follow in North Forest Cemetery, Marienville. The family suggests memorial contributions to: City Mission, 84 W. Wheeling St., Washington, PA 15301; The Salvation Army, P.O.
