LAS VEGAS, Nevada (EYT) — A gunman opened fire on Sunday night at a country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip, killing at least 58 people and injuring more than 500.

Around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, the gunman fired at the concert crowd from a room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel and resort which was located opposite the music festival.

According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Joseph Lombardo, the gunman — 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, a resident of Mesquite, Nevada — killed himself prior to their entry.

Sheriff Lombardo said that metropolitan police found a cache of weapons, including 10 rifles in the hotel room.

“This tragic and vicious attack on innocent people has claimed the lives of our fellow Americans and devastated hundreds of others who were simply enjoying a country music festival,” said Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval in a statement issued Monday.

The initial report of the death toll was estimated at 20; however, metropolitan police released the updated death toll early Monday morning.

Authorities are unsure of a motive. They have located the gunman’s companion, Marilou Danley, and she is currently being interviewed by authorities.

A command post and triage center was established at the strip, and parts of the area were shut down following the shooting.

Guests were unable to return to their hotel rooms; they were shuttled to a center equipped with metal detectors.

A three-day country music festival performance was underway across Las Vegas Boulevard from the Mandalay Bay hotel when the shooting occurred. Concertgoers say Jason Aldean performance was underway as the shooting erupted.

This shooting spree is the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history.

June 12, 2016: 29-year-old Omar Mateen, a security guard, killed 49 people and wounded 58 others at a gay nightclub that was hosting a Latin night in Orlando, Florida. The gunman was killed by police.

December 2, 2015: Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, a married couple living in Redlands, California, opened fire at a San Bernardino County Department of Public Health training event and holiday party. The couple killed 14 people and injured 22. Farook, an American-born U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent, worked at the health department. Malik had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in a Facebook post before the shooting. Both died in a shootout with police later that same day.

June 18, 2015: A gunman opened fire at a weekly Bible study at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Nine people were killed, including the pastor Clementa Pinckney; a 10th victim survived. The morning after the attack police arrested a suspect, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, who said he wanted to start a race war. In January of 2017, he was sentenced to death.

December 14, 2012: 20-year-old Adam Lanza gunned down 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School before killing himself.

October 16, 1991: 35-year-old George Hennard crashed his pickup through the wall of Luby’s Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas. He shot and killed 23 people before committing suicide.

August 20, 1986: Patrick Henry Sherrill, a part-time mail carrier, shot and killed 14 postal workers in Edmund, Oklahoma, before killing himself.

July 18, 1984: 41-year-old James Huberty gunned down 21 adults and children at a McDonald’s in San Ysidro, California, before being killed by police.
