According to information from https://seejanesee.preventblindness.org/, 66 percent of women are more likely to become blind while 65 percent are more likely to suffer from age-related macular degeneration, which is a leading cause of vision loss among people over 50.

Also, 63 percent of women are more likely to have vision impairment, 61 percent are more likely to develop glaucoma, and 61 percent are more likely to develop cataracts.

In recognition of those troubling statistics, April is Women’s Eye Health and Safety Month, and the best thing a person can do for their eyes is to have regular exams.

The qualified eye care professionals at Laurel Eye Clinic are encouraging women, as well as men, to make it a priority to have an annual eye exam.

“Women are more prone to eye diseases and progressive blindness than men, and account for two-thirds of blindness and visual impairments,” according to Laurel Eye Clinic.

Hormonal changes and lifestyle habits like smoking and excessive alcohol can play a vital role in irreversible eye disease and damage.

Some of the causal factors for visual impairments in women include: pregnancy, menopause, breast cancer, fertility drugs, and autoimmune disorders.

“It is important for every woman to understand the value of healthy eyes and take precautions. Do not wait till things get complicated. See an optometrist whenever you suspect a slight problem in the eyes,” explains Laurel Eye Clinic.

Laurel Eye recommends the following tips for taking care of your eyes:

  • Get a dilated eye exam;
  • Stop smoking;
  • Have vitamins in your diet, particularly C, E and Zinc;
  • Expectant mothers should be aware of possible vision changes during pregnancy;
  • Women who have diabetes or gestational diabetes should visit their eye doctor;
  • Stay active;
  • Wear sun glasses;
  • Use cosmetics safely;
  • Use contacts safely.
