Lawrence R. Kirwin

Lawrence R. Kirwin, 87, of Franklin, passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at The Caring Place.

Born on December 8, 1931, in Scranton, PA, he was the son of Lawrence M. and Georgianna T. (Haddow) Kirwin.

Lawrence proudly served his nation as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War Era; he was then Honorably Discharged into the Reserves after receiving the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Army of Occupation of Germany Medal. He left a Specialist 3rd Class Technician and was a member of the 63rd Tank Battalion.

On June 20, 1953, Lawrence married the love of his life, Shirley M. Greggs; she survives him.

Lawrence was employed by Joy Manufacturing as a Manager until his retirement.

In his spare time, Lawrence enjoyed a variety of activities. He was an avid bowler, where he was a member of the Venango County Bowling Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed golf and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge 328 in Franklin. Lawrence was a member of the St. Patricks Catholic Church in Franklin.

In addition to his wife, Lawrence is survived by his children, Bonnie K. Kirwin and her companion, Tom McGinnis, of Meadville, Lawrence “Gus” Kirwin and his wife, Jane, of Seneca, Michael M. Kirwin of Franklin, Theresa M. Tyler and her husband, Marshall, of Franklin, Douglas A. Kirwin and his wife, Dennise, of Franklin, Craig A. Kirwin of Franklin, and Christopher R. Kirwin and his wife, Amy, of Altoona.

He is further survived by his grandchildren, Melissa and Julie Kirwin, both of Pittsburgh, Adam and Joshua Kirwin, both of Franklin, and Daniel and Mackenzie Kirwin, both of Altoona; and his sister, Audrey Dick.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Georgette McGinty; and his brothers-in-law, James Dick and Jack McGinty.

Family and friends will be received on Sunday, January 13, 2019, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin, PA 16323. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, January 14, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Patrick Catholic Church, 949 Liberty Street, Franklin, PA 16323, with Msgr. John Herbein officiating.
