Leonard D. Johnston, 68, of Chase Street, Kane, died unexpectedly Sunday evening, August 5, 2018, at his home.

Born August 17, 1949 in Kane, he was the son of Donald and Lorraine Kraft Johnston. On January 8, 1972, in Kane, he married the former Linda M. Peterson, who survives.

Leonard had worked for the family business, Johnston’s Sunoco, then for Kane Screens for many years. Previously, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of St. Callistus Catholic Church in Kane, where he belonged to the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the VFW #1132 and the BPO Elks #329, both In Kane.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his father and stepmother Donald and Fay Johnston of Snow Camp, N.C.; sons James M. Johnston and Shawn Johnston, both of Kane; a daughter Michele Avenali of Kane; a brother Rick (Pam) Johnston of Kane; and grandchildren Ryan, Ashlyn and Mason Avenali.

A private viewing and service will take place at the Ronald McDonald II Funeral Home, Inc. with the rev. Jan Reynolds, pastor of the East Kane United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Kane.
