Smith LeroyLeroy Henry Smith, of Clarion, passed away on Monday, July 27, 2015, at the Clarion Hospital. He was 92 years of age.

Born on October 19, 1922, in Sarver, Butler County, PA, he was the only son of the late Howard J. and Frances (Shultz) Smith. After high school, he was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Second World War in the European Theater. He earned the European Theater Service Medal with six bronze stars and was honorably discharged in 1945 at the rank of Sergeant.

Leroy worked first as a carpenter and contractor for Harbison and Smith, a company that he partnered. He then was a dragline operator in the coal mining industry for Allison Engineering. He went on to become a foreman for C&K Coal and retired from that firm in 1988.

In 1943, he married the former Dorothy E. McFarland. She preceded him in death in 1997.

Leroy was well-known for his hearty-hand shakes, and his loving hugs. He enjoyed wood-working, creating things with a scroll saw, and mowing lawns for a hug and lunch. He was an also avid hunter.

He is survived by his children, Donna Briemeister, Dennis Smith, and his companion Darlene Glasser; Gary Smith, and his wife Arnetta; and Gregg Smith, and his wife Jean. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Dan Wilkewitz, and his wife, Robin; Brett Wilkewitz, Angela Grieb, and her husband, Bobby; and Nicholas Smith, and his wife Leah; along with numerous great-grandchildren. He will be especially missed by his dear friend, Myrtle Shirey.

Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street in Clarion where visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, July 30. An additional visitation will be held at the First Baptist Church, 649 Main Street in Clarion from 10-11 a.m. on Friday, July 31. Military honors will be accorded by the Honor Guard of American Legion Post 66 from Clarion at 10:45 a.m. at the church. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Pastor Jason Hunter officiating. Interment will be in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Sarver PA.
