Man Accused of Nearly Striking Trooper During Traffic Stop Faces Hearing on Wednesday

OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) — A man who allegedly nearly struck a state trooper during a traffic stop in Oil City last month is facing a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, November 29.

According to court documents, the hearing for 29-year-old Jonathan Scott Abbey, of Erie, is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Venango County Central Court on the following charges:

– Aggravated Assault, Felony 2
– Fleeing or Attempting to Elude Officer, Felony 3
– Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2
– Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Misdemeanor 2
– Obedience to Traffic-Control Devices, Summary
– Duty of Driver in Emergency Response Areas — If Pass in Nonadjacent Lane is Impossible, Summary
– Careless Driving, Summary
– Reckless Driving, Summary
– Fail to use safety belt — driver and front seat occupant, Summary

He is free on $75,000.00 monetary bail.

According to Franklin-based State Police, Trooper Matthew Shiley had stopped Jonathan Scott Abbey, of Erie, at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 29, on an incident with another driver.

Police say Trooper Shiley suspected Abbey of DUI and called for assistance. Abbey then started his vehicle and almost hit Trooper Shiley while fleeing the scene.
