SCRUBGRASS TWP., Pa. (EYT) – An area man is facing charges after he allegedly used counterfeit money to buy pepperoni rolls, cigarettes, and lottery tickets at a Venango County convenience store.

Franklin-based State Police filed the following charges Thursday against John Thomas Scott, 25, of Parker:

  • Trademark Counterfeiting – Displays, Felony 3
  • Theft By Decepeption-False Impression, Misdemeanor 1
  • Receiving Stolen Property, Misdemeanor 1

A criminal complaint filed by Tpr. Young at Magisterial District Judge Patrick E. Lowrey’s office indicates the incident occurred on January 10, 2018.

Around 8:26 a.m., Troopers Young and Johnson were dispatched to CoGo’s convenience store along Emlenton-Clintonville Road in Scrubgrass Township for a report of counterfeit bills being used at the store.

Upon arrival, Tpr. Young spoke with the store manager who indicated that one of her employees accepted counterfeit $20 bills from John Scott earlier that morning.

The store manager was able to identify Scott because earlier in the week he applied for a job at the store, and she interviewed him.

The cashier who accepted the counterfeit money also knew Scott from prior transactions.

Police said Scott entered the store with two men on the day of the incident.

Video surveillance reviewed by police shows Scott using the counterfeit bills to purchase one carton of Marlboro Red cigarettes, an unknown amount of lottery tickets, and an unknown number of pepperoni rolls, according to the criminal complaint.

The total amount of the purchase was $260.00.

Scott is awaiting a preliminary hearing.
