Man Attempts to Escape from Oil City Police Station

OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) — An Oil City man is facing additional charges stemming from an incident where he allegedly attempted to flee and escape following a criminal arraignment.

Court documents indicate the Oil City Police Department filed criminal charges against 30-year-old Joshua Wayne Godfrey, of Oil City.

According to a criminal complaint, around 1:50 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, Joshua Godfrey was being arraigned on charges at the Oil City Police Department by Magisterial District Judge Patrick E. Lowrey. Officer Anderson of the Oil City Police Department was present in the room with Godfrey during the arraignment.

The complaint noted Godfrey became aggravated with District Judge Patrick Lowrey, stating that he did not commit the charges and he “has been nothing but calm.”

According to the complaint, around 1:55 p.m., after the arraignment was over and Judge Lowrey had hung up the phone, Godfrey immediately stood up and ran toward the door, then exited the back of the Police Department and ran into the lobby area.

Officer Anderson followed Godfrey, telling him to stop running. According to the complaint, Officer Anderson then witnessed Godfrey run into a female victim. He then grabbed the woman and placed her between himself and Officer Anderson.

Ptlm. Ruditis, Ptlm. Deloe, and Officer Anderson were eventually able to place him into handcuffs and place him in a holding cell.

Godfrey was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Andrew F. Fish at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10, on the following charges:

– Escape, Felony 3
– Resist Arrest/Other Law Enforcement, Misdemeanor 2
– Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2

Unable to post $50,000.00 monetary bail, he remains lodged in the Venango County Jail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22.

Court documents indicate he also has hearings scheduled in front of Magisterial District Judge Andrew F. Fish on Wednesday, May 29, and on Wednesday, June 5, on several counts of possession of a controlled substance and use/possession of drug paraphernalia.
