Man Beaten with Handgun in Cranberry Township Home Invasion

CRANBERRY TWP., Pa. (EYT) — State Police in Franklin have released details surrounding an early morning home invasion in Cranberry Township, Venango County.

Franklin-based State Police filed the following charges Friday against Devin Michael Stephens, 20, of Franklin:

  • Burglary — Overnight Accommodations; Person Present, Bodily Injury, Crime Felony 1
  • Aggravated Assault, Felony 1 (2 counts)
  • Aggravated Assault, Felony 2 (2 counts)
  • Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 1 (2 counts)
  • Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2 (2 counts)
  • Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Misdemeanor 2 (2 counts)

According to a criminal complaint filed by Tpr. Alphonse, around 4:45 a.m. on Friday, police were dispatched to a residence located along Pear Street after receiving a call from a known male (victim 1) stating that two black males entered his home and assaulted him and a second known male.

The two intruders — Devin Stephens and another man who has not been charged allegedly entered the residence with shirts pulled over their heads, the complaint states.

Stephens allegedly beat (victim 2) with a handgun. The second intruder allegedly approached (victim 2) with a knife, the complaint indicates.

The criminal complaint states that the victims fought back, causing the intruders to drop the handgun and the knife.

(Victim 1) pushed the second intruder out of the residence. At this point, (victim 1) grabbed both weapons, the complaint continues.

Stephens then fled the residence, according to the criminal complaint.

The second intruder allegedly remained in the yard and attempted to take the gun from (victim 1). The victim pulled the shirt off the second intruder’s head and threw both weapons toward the yard, the complaint states.

(Victim 2) gained possession of the handgun and (Victim 1) instructed the second intruder to leave the property. He complied.

The victims went back into the residence and found a red Boston Red Sox hat and a cellular phone left behind by the two men.

Stephens picture was saved as a background image on the cellular phone. Both victims were able to identify him as one of the two intruders, according to the criminal complaint.

The criminal complaint states one of the victims was able to identify the second intruder after viewing a Facebook photo of him.

Stephens was lodged in the Venango County Jail. Bail was denied due to the nature of the crimes.

He faces a preliminary hearing on July 26 at 8:30 a.m. before Magisterial District Judge Andrew F. Fish.

Charges have not been filed against the second intruder as of early Saturday morning.
