BARKEYVILLE, Pa. (EYT) — A Mercer man is facing felony burglary and related charges after allegedly stealing tools and parts from a garage and residence in Barkeyville.

Court documents indicate the Polk Borough Police Department filed criminal charges against 20-year-old Shaun Alter, of Mercer.

According to a criminal complaint, on March 27, police received a call from a known woman reporting that Shaun Alter and another known man broke into a garage by damaging the hinges and removed tools and a generator.

The victim said a neighbor told her that a “beat-up red truck and a dark Jeep” were in her driveway. She said she texted the son of the known man and told him that she was filing charges against his father. During the conversation, the son told her that the generator and some tools were in the man’s garage.

The victim also stated that Alter went into her residence without her permission while her kids were downstairs and her boyfriend was upstairs and removed all of the tools from the residence along with tools from the two Ford trucks in the yard.

Officer Deeter spoke to the known man, and he stated that in the afternoon of March 24, Shaun Alter told him that the victim moved out, and he could have whatever he wanted. The man said Alter entered the garage by the hinge side of the door and removed tools, which were valued at approximately $300.00, as well as a generator valued at approximately $650.00 and then proceeded to cut two pipes and the catalytic converters, valued at $327.64 per piece, off of two Dodge vehicles that were sitting in the yard, according to the complaint.

He said Alter then proceeded to the residence where he went inside and removed tools valued at approximately $200.00 and then removed additional tools, valued at approximately $100.00 from two Ford trucks in the yard.

The known man said all of the items were placed in his truck. He also told police he heard Alter on the phone, offering to sell the generator for $50.00, so he offered to buy it and put it in his garage.

Based on the investigation, Alter was arraigned at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, in Magisterial District Judge Patrick E. Lowrey’s office on the following charges:

Burglary — Not Adapted for Overnight Accommodation, No Person Present, Felony 1
Burglary — Overnight Accommodations; Person Present, Felony 1
Criminal Trespass-Break Into Structure, Felony 2
Theft By Unlawful Taking-Movable Property, Misdemeanor (three counts)

Unable to post $5,000.00 monetary bail, he was lodged in the Venango County Jail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 9, with Judge Lowrey presiding.
