LAKE COUNTY, Illinois (EYT) – A man wanted for murder in Crawford County has been shot and killed by police near Chicago, Illinois.

According to a published article on yourerie.com, authorities confirmed that 36-year-old Kenneth Edwin Martell, of Springboro, Crawford County, was killed in an officer-involved shooting on Thursday morning around 5:00 a.m.

Sources say that when an officer noticed a suspicious vehicle back into a gravel road, she got out of her squad car to investigate. She observed an individual in the driver’s seat of the vehicle who appeared to be sleeping.

As she made contact with the individual (later identified as Martell), Martell brandished a firearm and a struggle emerged.

According to sources, another officer arrived on the scene, and a second firearm was noticed in the vehicle. One of the officers shot Martell who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to sources.

An autopsy by the Lake County, Illinois coroner revealed that Martell died of injuries from a gunshot wound to the face.

It is unknown whether Martell discharged his firearm.

Martell was wanted by PSP Meadville for allegedly killing 89-year old Theodore M. Garver, also of Springboro, Crawford County, sometime between the hours of 10:30 p.m. on Monday, July 23, and 6:59 a.m. on Tuesday, July 24.

Meadville-based State Police say Carver was killed at a residence on Parker Road and then moved to an area off Reeds Corner Road just south of Parker Road where the body was recovered by PSP.
