Mary E. Kassel, age 95, of St. Andrew’s Village, Indiana PA, formerly of Clarion, died on July 10, 2012, at St. Andrew’s Village.

Born on October 23, 1916 in Cornwall MO, she was the daughter of Leon James and Eva (Wolfe) Scowden. She was married to James Kassel who preceded her in death along with her parents. All of Mary’s siblings are deceased. They were Harold Scowden, Paul Scowden, and Kathleen Black.

Jim and Mary Kassel met at the USO. Mary was a homemaker and teacher. She and her husband were active members of the First Presbyterian Church of Clarion where Mary was the second president of the Clarion Presbyterian Women serving from 1952-1955. She was ordained in 1972 and served as the first female Elder of the Church. Mary and Jim were also active members of the “Fiddle-Arounds” square-dancing club in Clarion. Jim was a “caller” for many local dances. They also enjoyed raising exotic fish.

Visitation will be held from 7-9pm on Thursday, July 12 at the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street in Clarion. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, July 13 at the First Presbyterian Church in Clarion with the Rev. Scott Hauser, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Clarion Cemetery.
