Melvin D. Neiswonger

Melvin D. Neiswonger, 80, of Fairmount City, died on Friday evening, August 25, 2017, at the Armstrong County Memorial Hospital in Kittanning.

Born on May 20, 1937 in Kittanning, he was the son of the late Lloyd Elmer and Evelyn Susannah (Dwyer) Neiswonger, Sr. He was married on June 1, 1957 to Shelby J. (Chillcott).

Mel graduated from Summerville High School.

As a young man he worked in a factory in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a coal miner with his father. He worked for the highway department; Hoover’s milk plant; RMS Furniture and the Postal Department.

He is best known as the owner and manager of Mel’s Arco through the 1970’s and 1980’s in New Bethlehem. He also owned and operated Mel’s Alcola Service until he retired.

During his retirement he worked at the Moose, St. Charles Catholic Church, and VFW in New Bethlehem.

He loved spending time and working at his camp in Mayport. He always had a construction project he was working on either at home or at the camp.

His family was always his first priority.

Mel is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shelby J. Neiswonger of Fairmount City, two daughters, Dianna Neiswonger and Gerri Colwell and her husband Keith, both of Fairmount City, two grandchildren, Toni Stiglitz (Grant Traister) and Caleb Colwell (Ashley Renwick), four great grandchildren, Alex Rupp, Dylan Rupp, Hailey Rupp, and Eli Colwell, two brothers, Lloyd Neiswonger, Jr. and his wife Veryl and Glenn Neiswonger and his wife Gin, both of New Bethlehem, two sisters, Grace Miller and her husband Charlie of New Bethlehem and Shirley Smith and her husband Brad of Mayport, also numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 28, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Cindy Duffee officiating.

Interment will be in the New Bethlehem Cemetery.
