SUGARCREEK BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) — Sugarcreek Borough Police are investigating a motor vehicle accident that occurred late Tuesday morning on Rocky Grove Avenue.

According to police, around 11:24 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5, a vehicle operated by 23-year-old Jacob Hernan, of Franklin, was traveling south on Rocky Grove Avenue just north of Keely Road when Hernan failed to negotiate a slight left curve in the roadway.

Police say witnesses reported that once the vehicle left the roadway, they did not see brake lights or any type of corrective maneuvers.

The vehicle then traveled 257 feet and struck a tree head-on.

Following the impact, Hernan was seen crawling from the vehicle with a bag and entering a wooded area. He then emerged from the wooded area without the bag and began walking north on Rocky Grove Avenue, heading away from the scene.

Officers were able to locate Hernan easily because he was unable to move quickly due to his injuries from the crash.

Hernan and a 17-year-old passenger in the vehicle were both transported to UPMC Northwest for treatment of serious injuries.

According to police, neither Hernan nor the passenger were wearing seatbelts.

Police say the bag and various items, including methamphetamine, were then located by officers.

Charges are currently pending the result of blood tests.

Police also noted that Hernan was found to have multiple warrants for his arrest, unrelated to the crash, and was also listed as an absconder from Pennsylvania Probation and Parole.

Police were assisted at the scene by Community Ambulance, Rocky Grove Volunteer Fire Department, Reno Volunteer Fire Department, and Lowrey Auto Body.
