Mike Bauer Visits Victory Lane at Mercer Raceway on Saturday

It was another summer like weekend in western Pennsylvania as several area tracks closed out their 2014 seasons. Mercer Raceway Park was in action both Friday and Saturday as the 15th annual Little Guy Nationals were completed.

Jeff Hoffman of Franklin scored the opening night win in modified competition while Frank Guidace came back to win night two.

George Hobaugh capped off a great first season behind the wheel of his 305 sprint car winning his first Mercer feature Friday night.

Clarion’s Mike Bauer scored a big win Saturday driving the Lockhart 58 sprinter bringing the Mercer season to a close. Next up at Mercer will be the Jack Frost 150 enduro which is scheduled for January 4th.

Saturday night area sprint car fans headed to Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway where the newly formed Renegade Sprint Series was making their first ever visit to the monster half mile. This was the first sanctioned winged sprint car race at the track since 1999 A nice field of thirty-one sprints was joined by fourteen crate late models and fans were treated to some great racing.

Greg Wilson was the winner of the first ever Renegade race at Pittsburgh SaturdayThe Renegade feature saw a great three way battle between Danny Holtgraver, Randy Hannagan, and Greg Wilson which in the end saw Wilson come out victorious over Holtgraver and Hannagan, who was the winner of the inaugural Renegade race a few weeks ago at Atomic Speedway in Ohio.

In the late model feature it was Daryl Charlier dominating the twenty lap feature for the win over Josh Holtgraver. Saturday closed out the season at Pittsburgh but look for several sprint car races there next year including a return of the Renegade Sprint Series.

Sharon Speedway closed their season on Saturday with a regular show that like so many weeks before found a King in victory lane. This week it was Rex King scoring the win in the big block modified feature. The win was the 49th of his career at the Hartford, Ohio oval.

On the national circuit the World of Outlaw late models invaded Knoxville Raceway in Iowa along with a host of the nation’s best drivers for the late model nationals. There were nearly eighty late models signed in for action and Brian Birkhofer upset the country’s hottest late model racer Scott Bloomquist with a last lap pass for the win.

Meanwhile the World of Outlaws sprint cars were in Indiana and Michigan and to no one’s surprise point leader Donny Schatz swept both nights of action. This Friday and Saturday the World of Outlaws will invade the historic Williams Grove Speedway near Harrisburg for the National Open, the biggest sprint car race of the season on the east coast.
