Moniteau Breaks Out the Bats in Win Over A-C Valley

| April 21, 2018

BUTLER, Pa. (D9Sports) – Seven different Moniteau players had multiple RBI days, including three players with three steaks each, to lead the Warriors to an 18-0, three-inning win over A-C Valley Friday afternoon at Kelly Automotive Park in Butler, Pa.

Hunter Fitzingo, Jared Lominski and Gage Neal each drove in three runs for Moniteau with Chance Nagy, Nate Sosigian, Wyatt Geibel and Andrew Dulya each adding a pair of RBIs.

Fitzingo led the offense going 3-for-4 with an RBI triple, a two-run double and a single and also scored three times.

“I just saw fastballs,” Fitzingo said. “I went up there looking straight fastball, and I (was) really comfortable in the box.”

Dulya added a pair of RBIs singles to right and scored once, while Brice Williams was 1-for-1 while being hit by two pitches and scored three times. Geibel was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI singles. He also walked and scored three times.

While the Warriors offense was raking, Lee DeMatteis was keeping the A-C Valley bats silent allowing just two hits in his three innings of work with one of those being a comebacker to the mound that went off his glove allowing Joe DeHart to reach on an infield single in the second.

“I just wanted to pound the zone,” DeMatteis, who struck out four and didn’t walk a batter, said. “If they hit the ball, I have a great defense behind me.”

Lominski said DeMatteis “stuff” was really good in the short outing.

“I saw a lot of great stuff,” Lominski said. “I saw him hitting his spots. I saw him throwing a lot of fastballs where I wanted him to, and he got the job done.”

Lominski also got the job done early for Moniteau breaking the ice with a three-run triple to left in the first inning after Sosigian and Geibel had drawn back-to-back walks with one out to load the bases – Fitzingo started the rally with a leadoff single.

“I think it got us alive in the dugout,” Lominski said. “It got us alive on the field, and it got us wanting to win this game. That’s what we did.”

Lominski, who scored in the first on a two-out single by Dulya, was one of nine Warriors with hits in the game – Moniteau had 13 hits total.

“It’s a big thing, it’s a big thing,” Lominski said when asked how important it was to get contributions throughout the lineup.

After the four-run first, Moniteau added four more runs in the second before putting the game away with a 10-spot in the third.

Neal had the big hit in the second with a two-out, two-run double to center. That came after Fitzingo tripled in a run and Geibel had an RBI single.

Then in the third, Moniteau took advantage of some defensive issues for A-C Valley while also pounding out seven hits, walking twice and getting hit by a pitch to put up the 10 runs.

Sosigian got the scoring started in the inning when he laced a two-run, bases-loaded, one-out single to left to make it 10-0. Geibel followed with an RBI single ending the day for A-C Valley starter Broc Weigle.

Lominski greeted reliever Luke Whitcomb with a roller to shortstop, but Geibel beat the rap at second on a late flip by the shortstop Levi Orton to reload the bases.

Neal followed with a lazy fly ball to center that was dropped by center fielder Lucas Larimore scoring another run – Neal got credit for a sac fly on the play – and Dulya followed with a run-scoring single to right. Pinch-hitter David Marterella then had an RBI groundout before Fitzingo and Nagy had back-to-back two-run doubles to end the scoring.

A-C Valley tried to keep things going in the bottom of the third when pinch hitter Sam Anderson had a line-drive single to left over the head of Fitzingo, the shortstop, but DeMatteis got Tony Thompson to fly out to left and Orton to line out to second to end the game.

Moniteau moves to 5-3 with the win. The Warriors are back in action at 11 a.m. Saturday against Clarion at the Clarion County Park.

A-C Valley drops to 0-5 on the year. The Falcons return to action Tuesday at Cranberry.
