The transfer rule will eliminate the need for permission to contact a student-athlete when the student-athlete transfers programs.

In the past, athletes were required to obtain permission for other schools to contact said athlete and coaches of the school the athlete was transferring from were able to block the athlete from transferring to certain schools. This was a widespread practice in many conferences with coaches not allowing a student-athlete to transfer to a school within the conference.

But starting in October, student-athletes will be able to transfer without asking for permission. Under the new process, athletes will be able to notify their current school of their desire to transfer and the school will then be required to enter the student’s name into a database within two business days of the request. Once the name is in the database, other coaches are free to talk to the athlete without permission.

The new rule will allow conferences to make rules within the process that are more restrictive than the national rule, according to a release from the NCAA.

On the transfer side of things, athletes can do compete in up to four games without losing a season of competition. Student-athletes will still have five years to complete four seasons of competition meaning that an athlete who is injured in game four of a football season who hasn’t previously used a redshirt will now be able to redshirt.
