Nelson PhilpNelson L. Philp, Jr., 85, of Knox, PA passed away Friday, February 10, 2017 at the Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born May 6, 1931 in Waynesburg, PA, he was the son of Nelson L. Philp, Sr. and Charlotte Belle (Baker) Philp.

Nelson graduated from Centerville High School, California University and earned a Master’s Degree from Penn State University.

He served in the U.S. Army as an Artillery Survey Specialist from 1953 to 1955 and received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

On December 30, 1956, Nelson married Charylene Henry who survives.

Nelson taught industrial arts at Shannock Valley, Clarion-Limestone, Pocono Mountain and Austin Area School Districts. For several years, he was a project engineer for Knox Glass Containers.

Upon retirement, Nelson and Charylene purchased a farm in the Knox area and enjoyed raising pigs and beef cattle. Nelson restored the farmhouse and delighted in spending time with family and friends there.

Along with his wife, Nelson is survived by four children, Karen (Lee) Grosch of Clarion, Jennifer (Greg) Shufran of Philipsburg, Connell Philp of Clearfield and Valerie (Keith) Walter of Altoona. In addition, Nelson is survived by six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Wayne and Charles, and his sister, Norma (Philp) Hefferan.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Monday, Feb. 13th, at the McEntire-Weaver Funeral Home, 504 East Penn Ave., Knox, PA and from 10 to 11 am on Tuesday at the Edenburg Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Knox, PA.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am Tuesday in the church with Pastor Brian Hauser officiating.

Private interment will follow at the Rimersburg Cemetery.

The American Legion Post 720 of Knox will perform full military honors.
