NWS Confirms Two Tornadoes Hit Clarion County

tornado-damage-1234368_1280CLARION COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) — The National Weather Service has confirmed that two tornadoes touched down in Clarion County on Monday afternoon.

According to a preliminary local storm report issued by the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, four brief tornadoes were discovered during a storm survey Tuesday in Butler, Clarion and Forest counties.

Each of the tornadoes have been rated EFO on the enhanced Fujita scale, which means that wind was no greater than 85 MPH.

Here’s a look at preliminary data for each tornado:

PROSPECT, BUTLER COUNTY – 2:31 PM

Location: Northwest Prospect, 40.91n, 80.07w
Remarks: EF0 damage at Main Street and Douglas Street

ELDORADO ROAD, BUTLER COUNTY – 2:56 PM

Location: Eldorado Road, 41.09n 79.73w
Remarks: A focused, narrow swath of tornadic damage was discovered in the woods along eldorado road. The damage in this area consisted of a narrow path of snapped and uprooted hardwood trees. Based on the damage, the brief tornado was rated EFO.

FARMINGTON TOWNSHIP, CLARION COUNTY – 3:26 PM

Location: Turkey Ridge, 41.33n 79.25w
Remarks: A brief but focused tornadic circulation caused damage to trees over a narrow path from within the wooded area northeast of Gravel Lick Road and continuing across State Route 36 where numerous evergreen trees and a few hardwood trees were snapped in a long, very narrow track. Preliminary reports indicate the tornado has been rated EFO.

COOKSBURG, CLARION COUNTY – 3:27 PM

Location: Forest Road, 41.34n 79.22w
Remarks: A distinct tornadic circulation developed in the wooded area between Route 36 and Forest Road in Clarion County, very near the Forest County line. A very narrow swath of focused damage to trees, including snaps and uproots were discovered in this area. The tornado was rated EFO.

Explore’s Scott Shindledecker spoke with Matthew Kramar, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, after they surveyed tornado damage in Butler County.

“There was some damage where trees fell on top of trailer homes and vehicles and some roofs where shingles had been torn off. They were also uprooted, twisted and broken trees, but we’ve had no reported injuries,” Kramar said.

Additional information on the path length, width, and maximum speed for each tornado is expected to be released on Wednesday.
