JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. (EYT) – The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has released additional information on two tornadoes that touched down in Jefferson County early Tuesday evening.

An on-site survey conducted Wednesday by National Weather Service investigators revealed that an EF-0 tornado touched down along State Route 28 in Brookville, just south of south of U.S. Route 322, at approximately 5:05 p.m.

Coordinates provided by the National Weather Service show the tornado hit in the area of Clement Run.

The maximum wind speed was 70 MPH, the path length was 4 miles, and the maximum width was 50 yards.

EF-O is the least powerful tornado on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with EF-5 being the most destructive.

A second tornado was confirmed near Baxter in Clover Township, Jefferson County, around 5:35 p.m.

Preliminary data from the National Weather Service estimates the tornado was an EF-2 with a maximum wind speed of 110 MPH.

The path length was 4 miles and the maximum width was 200 yards.

Officials say some property damage occurred; however, the damage was mostly limited to snapped tree trunks, large broken branches, and uprooted trees.

Additionally, several large headstones were overturned and trees were uprooted at a cemetery along Cemetery Road in Clover Township.

Fire companies from Brookville, Corsica, Hawthorn, Pine Creek, and Summerville, and local municipal employees worked around the clock to clear area roadways.

Hawthorn Volunteer Fire Chief Curt Kiehl was among the emergency workers on scene.

“Trees and wires were down. One house had it’s roof taken off,” said Chief Kiehl. “It was a mess.”
