‘Observing Meteors’ Scheduled at the Oil Region Astronomical Observatory Tonight

| July 25, 2014

FRANKLIN, Pa. – The Oil Region Astronomical Observatory, in Two Mile Run County Park, will be open to the public starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 25.

Friday evening’s education program titled, Observing Meteors, will focus on these dust-sized particles that Earth runs into as it orbits the sun. As they travel through the atmosphere at extremely high velocities, they heat up causing the particle to glow; the result being a shooting star. The vast majority of the universe we know today is invisible to the eye, or even the Hubble Space Telescope. In the 1930’s it was discovered that many objects in space give off radio waves, opening up the field of radio astronomy, and allowing scientists to see much of what was once “invisible”. ORAS member Miranda Heller, will be this evenings presenter.

Weather permitting you’re in for a real treat. The planets Saturn and Mars, the Great Hercules Cluster, and numerous other objects are visible in the night sky! If you’ve never seen the Rings of Saturn, then come join us for an exciting evening under the stars. In addition, if you have your own binoculars or telescope, bring them on out and ORAS members will be happy to provide tips on night sky observing with your own equipment.

The Oil Region Astronomical Society encourages interested individuals of all ages to attend. There is NO CHARGE for admission, however donations are always appreciated. Members of the general public are always welcome to bring their own binoculars and/or telescope if they wish to do so. Clear sky or clouds, the Observatory will be open for the regular meeting and educational program.
