The Oil City Middle School News Team, known as “OCmsn,” was honored for their placement in a statewide video competition this year.

According to Oil City teacher and team advisor Brian Rondinelli, Oil City placed third out of the top 22 school districts in the state, which were chosen from a total of 283 districts.

“It was quite an accomplishment,” Rondinelli said.

The students on the team, Mackenzie Canaan, Makayla Canaan, Sarah Fox, Olivia Vorse, Carley Ames, Memphis Hulver, and Shalyn Whittemore, had to put together a two and a half minute video about a manufacturer for the “What’s So cool About Manufacturing” contest.

The Oil City team worked with the Matric Group for their video.

“It’s not just like a handheld camera,” Rondinelli added. “They’re using green screens, they’re using Hollywood software editing, they’re doing after-effects, they’re doing all the editing.”

The Oil City team not only took third in the state, after being judged by a panel of professional video editors, they also came home with the Viewers’ Choice award and the Best Overall Program award at the Forest-Oil Region contest.

“They are really an amazing group of students and Oil City should be very, very proud of what they’re doing.”

In honor of the achievement, the Oil City council issued a proclamation naming July 29, 2020, “Oil City Middle School News Team Day.”

“Kudos to you and congratulations for coming in third and making Oil City proud,” mayor Bill Moon said.
