New ‘Oiler Way’ Program Debuts at Oil City Middle School

| September 18, 2018

OIL CITY, Pa. – Oil City Middle School students and staff are participating in a new school-wide behavior program called The Oiler Way.

This program has been put in place in order to enhance positive student behavior and interactions at the middle school, while also reducing discipline referrals.

While participating in The Oiler Way, faculty and staff will recognize students for displaying expected behavior before, during, and after school. Faculty and staff are looking for students who are being safe, responsible, and respectful.

When expected behaviors are displayed, students will be given an Oiler Way ticket, and the staff member giving the ticket will specifically address why they are receiving it. The student is then responsible for entering the ticket into “The Oiler Way” Oil Tanks. Tickets will be collected, tallied, and used to reward students with a variety of prizes.

Joy Zuck, co-principal, noted, “We are so proud to watch our school community grow! Our students and staff are proud to work together as a team. Interactions have been positive, and the whole school is involved in looking out for each person here!”

Co-principal Craig Kasunic added, “Our students have really embraced The Oiler Way during the first few weeks of school. Over 2,000 tickets have been given out for positive behavior, and less than 10 office discipline referrals were made.”

School data from the 2016-2017 school year shows that in the month of September, the office received 186 discipline referrals. In 2017-2018, the number dropped to 115. Currently, for the 2018-2019 school year, the number is less than 10.

Faculty members of The Oiler Way meet monthly to discuss the progress of the program. Members include co-principals Craig Kasunic and Joy Zuck, teachers Bundy Fulmer, Samantha Stierheim, Sara Haupt, and Jeff Brown, guidance counselor Amy Serbati, and TaC Consultant Kelly Opatt.

In order to fund student rewards and The Oiler Way program, the Oil City Middle School is selling a winner takes all daily raffle ticket. The winner will be chosen from the evening Pick 3 Daily number on October 13th, 2018. These $10 tickets include prizes from the following local businesses: Villa Italia, Giant Eagle, Heath’s Market, Yellow Dog Lantern, Agway, Four Star Pizza, Scoot’s Auto Detailing, C&S Hilltop Hardware, Natural Resources Day Spa, Hasson Pool, and the YMCA. Tickets can be purchased through the Oil City Middle School office or at Barber’s Orchard, Agway, and Karma Coffee.

Oil City Middle School is proud to say that their students are living The Oiler Way!
