OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) – An Oil City man waived his hearing on Wednesday on theft charges related to an investigation that revealed he was reportedly stealing money from his employer.

Court documents indicate one second-degree misdemeanor count of theft by unlawful taking filed against 28-year-old Steven John Beatty was waived for court on Wednesday, May 27.

The charge has been transferred to the Venango County Court of Common Pleas.

Beatty remains free on $1,000.00 unsecured bail.

The charge stems from an investigation initiated in early March.

Details of the case:

According to a criminal complaint, on March 4, Oil City Police initiated an investigation into thefts occurring at the Country Fair store located on Wilson Avenue in which an individual employed by the business was taking money from the cash register.

According to the complaint, police discovered Steven J. Beatty was employed as a cashier with the business and, while working, voided multiple transactions from the associated cash register and then removed the cash from the cash register.

Beatty was interviewed by police on March 5.

The complaint states Beatty admitted to being involved in the incidents of voiding items in transactions and taking money from the cash register from January 11, 2020, to February 8, 2020, totaling $98.88 and allegedly stated he took the money due to addictions to prescription medication and gambling.

The charge was filed against Beatty through Magisterial District Judge Andrew F. Fish’s office on Wednesday, March 18.
