Oil City Man Arrested on Strangulation Charges

OIL CITY, Pa. (EYT) – An Oil City man was jailed on charges that he assaulted and strangled a woman on Tuesday afternoon during a domestic incident.

According to court documents, 23-year-old Aaron Dewayne Wheeler, of Oil City, was arraigned in front of District Judge Patrick Lowrey at 7:54 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12, on the following charges:

– Strangulation – Applying Pressure to Throat or Neck, Felony 2
– Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2
– Harassment – Subject Other to Physical Contact, Summary

Unable to post $25,000.00 monetary bail, he was lodged in the Venango County Jail.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Oil City Police Officer Codie Webster on December 12, he and Officer Codie Scott Hargenrader responded to a West 4th Street residence for a domestic incident. When officers arrived, they found Wheeler who was attempting to leave. Officer Hargenrader stayed with Wheeler while Officer Webster entered the residence and spoke with the female victim.

Officer Webster saw recent signs of a physical injury under the victim’s left eye. The victim said Wheeler placed both of his hands around her neck and pushed her against the wall, making it difficult for her to breathe, according to the complaint.

She then said Wheeler entered the bedroom and began throwing items around while attempting to pack his clothes. The victim said she tried to get Wheeler to calm down when he struck her in the face with an open hand, the complaint states.

The victim also stated that Wheeler shoved her into a dresser and threw her on to a bed and then held her down. In addition to the injury under her eye, Officer Webster saw several scratches on the victim’s arms and bruising on her forearms, according to the complaint.

Wheeler’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20, with Judge Lowrey presiding.
